Think before you juice

While everyone, or at least all the health enthusiasts I know, are getting excited about juicing (read the health benefits of juicing here), there are some things you need to consider before you juice.
Here are some:
- Choose organic vegetables and fruits. Go local. Organic fruits and vegetables are free from harmful chemicals and by going local you’re supporting small farmers and reducing your carbon footprint.
- Learn to listen to your body. Juicing should make you feel good.
- Juice appropriately. Limit fruit juicing when you have diabetes or high cholesterol (tip: make vegetables/green juices instead!)
- Slow down. Start with vegetables that are easy to digest and then move on to other vegetables when the stomach has adjusted.
- Enjoy your juice. Drink the juice right away, especially if you use a fast juicer. Add limes, lemon, or coconut for extra flavor.
- As my raw chef guru, Elaina Love, said, “Chew your juice and drink your solids (which means to liquefy food in your mouth before swallowing).” This is to release the digestive juices so the juice will be gentle to your stomach.
- Yes to zero waste. Use your juice pulp for other dishes such as soups or for dehydrated crackers.
- Clean your juice after each use, first by filling with water and turning it on – this is a simple way to ensure it is well-cleaned.
Happy juicing!
